Understanding Cat Allergies
More and more families are looking for so-called “hypoallergenic” cats, especially when a household member is sensitive to allergies. While no cat is truly hypoallergenic, the Selkirk Rex and Devon Rex are often considered more tolerable for allergy sufferers. Why?
These breeds, known for their unique curly or wavy coat, generally produce lower levels of the Fel d1 protein—the main cause of allergic reactions in humans. This protein is found in saliva, skin, and sebaceous secretions. Its presence varies from one individual to another, but it is often lower in neutered or spayed cats, further reducing the risk of allergic reactions.
Additionally, the dense, woolly coat of the Selkirk Rex—although abundant—tends to retain allergens more effectively, limiting their dispersal into the air. Regular grooming (brushing and occasional baths) also helps reduce exposure. The same principle applies to the Devon Rex, whose coat is wavy rather than curly.
It is important to note that each person reacts differently. We therefore recommend testing compatibility for all family members when allergies are a concern.
Our Allergy Test Kit
We offer the possibility of receiving an allergy test kit delivered directly to your home, using material from our intact Selkirk Rex or Devon Rex cats. You will receive an explanatory guide along with a comfort toy containing a high concentration of Fel d1 protein and cat hair. Each toy stays with our cats for over 24 hours before shipping.
The test should be carried out over several days. We have been using this method for many years and are very satisfied with the results and feedback from our clients.
