The arrival of your little Rex at home
The arrival of your new Selkirk Rex or Devon Rex kitten is a very special moment, often eagerly anticipated and filled with excitement.
For him, however, it is a major upheaval: for the first time, he is leaving his family, his familiar surroundings, and the reassuring environment of the cattery. It is therefore essential to respect his pace of adjustment and to offer him a gentle, gradual transition.
Creating a safe and reassuring space
Your kitten has never known any place other than the one where he was born. To help him feel safe, prepare a small room just for him, preferably a powder room or small bathroom, which household members should avoid using for the first 4 to 5 days.
Avoid noisy areas (washing machine, dryer, vacuum cleaner).
Set up a litter box, fresh water, food, a small sleeping area, and a blanket carrying the scent of his mother and littermates (provided by our cattery).
Avoid bedrooms with beds: a stressed kitten may hide underneath and not come out for several days.
If the room is too large, he may feel vulnerable and develop anxiety. A smaller, quiet space will help him relax and settle in more easily.
First interactions
Your kitten needs to hear the voices of family members without feeling threatened by intrusive presence or sudden movements. Enter the room calmly (no more than two people at a time), sit down, and speak to him gently. Selkirk Rex and Devon Rex kittens are generally curious and playful; over the course of a few hours, your kitten will naturally come toward you to explore or initiate play.
Gradual exploration of the home
After 4 to 5 days, you may leave the door to his room open so he can explore his new environment at his own pace. Choose a quiet moment (ideally when children are at school) to avoid noises and sudden movements that could frighten him. Always keep the door to his original room open so he can retreat there if he feels the need. Close bedroom doors and, if possible, restrict access to the basement. You can gradually open these areas as his confidence grows.
Each kitten settles in at their own pace: some will feel comfortable within 2 days, while others may take up to 10 days.
Remember: patience, gentleness, and respect for his rhythm are the keys to a successful integration and a happy, confident little Rex.
