The DBE 💎 Gene (Dominant Blue Eye)
The DBE gene (Dominant Blue Eye) is an extremely rare genetic trait in the Devon Rex and is even more uncommon within the Selkirk Rex breed. It allows for the presence of blue or intensely blue eyes without any association with the colourpoint gene (Siamese-type) or the dominant white gene. A cat carrying the DBE gene may therefore exhibit a solid, tabby, or smoke coat while naturally retaining blue eyes.
DBE is an autosomal dominant gene, meaning that a single carrier parent may transmit the trait to a portion of its offspring. However, this gene remains poorly documented from a scientific standpoint, and there is currently no reliable commercial DNA test available to identify it with certainty. Its recognition therefore relies on careful phenotype observation, documented inheritance patterns, and the strict exclusion of other known genes responsible for blue eyes.
It is important to emphasize that only a very limited number of breeders currently possess the advanced genetic knowledge required to work responsibly with the DBE gene. Ethical DBE breeding extends far beyond the simplistic rule of merely avoiding a DBE × DBE pairing. Multiple variables must be thoroughly understood and evaluated before breeding a DBE carrier with another cat of the same breed. These include lineage stability, transmission consistency across multiple generations, rigorous exclusion of other high-risk genes, and long-term health and phenotypic monitoring of the offspring.
It must also be clearly stated that when the DBE gene is worked without sufficient expertise or proper genetic oversight, it may be associated with serious anomalies and has no place in ethical breeding practices. For this reason, DBE must be approached with the utmost rigor, transparency, and responsibility.
Within the Selkirk Rex and Devon Rex breeds, the presence of the DBE gene remains exceptional. While it represents a genetic trait of significant interest, it must never take precedence over health, temperament, and overall genetic stability. Any integration of DBE into a serious breeding program must follow a gradual, well-documented approach guided by ethics rather than by the pursuit of rarity.
Our approach is grounded in knowledge, caution, and responsibility. The DBE gene is regarded as a fascinating genetic characteristic—still evolving from a scientific perspective—that requires humility, expertise, and a genuine commitment to the well-being of the cats and to the future of the Selkirk Rex and Devon Rex breeds.
🧬In Canada, only a small and carefully selected group of ethical breeders are currently working progressively with the DBE gene in the Devon Rex, following a cautious and well-documented approach. To date, we are the only breeder in Canada actively and responsibly working with the DBE gene in the Selkirk Rex.
❗️Given the complexity of this gene and the lack of scientific documentation, caution is essential. We strongly encourage prospective adopters and fellow breeders to remain vigilant toward imitations or breeding programs claiming DBE without the necessary genetic knowledge, long-term observation, and ethical framework required for this type of work. The DBE gene demands expertise, transparency, and responsibility, and should never be approached without a deep understanding of its implications.
