From our cattery in Canada — every step of the import, explained
The United Arab Emirates welcome cats from Canada, under clear rules. They are strict, but they are not long: unlike Japan, Australia or New Zealand, where a kitten cannot travel before about seven months of age, the Emirates impose no waiting period after the rabies blood test.
We have been breeding purebred cats since 2009 in Canada. This page explains how a kitten from our cattery reaches Dubai, Abu Dhabi or any other emirate: what the law requires, in what order, and how long it really takes. These rules apply to every cat, whatever the breed: they are the same for our Selkirk Rex and our Devon Rex kittens. See our kittens.
The rules at a glance
Minimum age for a cat to enter the UAE
Minimum between the rabies vaccine and departure — and between the vaccine and the blood test
Minimum result of the rabies antibody test (FAVN) required for cats from Canada
After the blood test: once the result is compliant, the kitten can travel
The journey, step by step
Seven steps, in this order. None of them can be skipped.
-
Reservation, in Canada
Your adoption is concluded directly with our cattery, under a written contract, exactly as for every family. How our priority list works.
-
Microchip in your name
An EIDAP microchip, implanted before any vaccination and registered in your name. Your kitten travels as your own pet.
-
Rabies vaccination
Given at 12 weeks of age or older, at least 21 days before departure, with the other core vaccines up to date and recorded in the health booklet.
-
Rabies antibody test (FAVN)
Required for cats from Canada. The blood sample is taken at least 21 days after the rabies vaccine and analysed by an approved laboratory. The result must reach 0.5 IU/mL or more, and remains valid for 365 days before arrival. There is no waiting period afterwards — only the time the laboratory takes to send the result.
-
UAE import permit
Issued by the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) before travel, and valid for 30 days: the flight is booked within that window. As a personal import, one person may bring in up to two cats.
-
Health certificate & CFIA endorsement
Treatment against internal and external parasites within the 14 days before export, a veterinary examination, then the official UAE health certificate, endorsed by a veterinarian of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). It is valid for 10 days.
-
Flight & arrival
By cargo or with a flight nanny, depending on the route, arranged with our IPATA-certified shipping agent. The date takes the season into account: during the hottest months, airlines may restrict the transport of animals to the Gulf. You collect your kitten at the arrival terminal in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
When does a kitten leave for the Emirates?
Our kittens usually leave the cattery between 14 and 16 weeks of age. For the Emirates, the rabies vaccine at 12 weeks, the 21 days before the blood test and the laboratory delay push departure a little later: count on about four to five months of age.
Until then, your kitten stays with us — and you can watch it on our 24/7 live camera, whatever the time difference between Canada and the Gulf.
