Selkirk Rex
& Devon RexKittens for the USA

Coast to coast Across the U.S.

From our cattery in Canada — every step of the journey, explained

The United States are our neighbours, and cats cross the border under simple rules. There is no federal import permit for a pet cat, no rabies antibody test and no waiting period — with one exception, Hawaii. What really matters is the rules of your own state, and those of the airline.

We have been breeding purebred cats since 2009 in Canada. This page explains how a kitten from our cattery reaches its new home in the United States: what the rules require, in what order, and how long it really takes. These rules apply to every cat, whatever the breed: they are the same for our Selkirk Rex and our Devon Rex kittens. See our kittens.

The rules at a glance

0 federal permits

The USDA sets no animal-health requirement for a pet cat, and the CDC does not require proof of rabies vaccination for cats

14–16 weeks

The usual departure age from our cattery — the same as for families in Canada

50 states

Each state sets its own entry rules: yours are checked before every departure

1 exception

Hawaii, free of rabies, requires two vaccines and a blood test before arrival

The journey, step by step

Six steps, from the reservation to your arrival airport.

  1. Reservation, in Canada

Your adoption is concluded directly with our cattery, under a written contract, exactly as for every family. How our priority list works.

  2. Microchip in your name

An EIDAP microchip, implanted before any vaccination and registered in your name. Your kitten travels as your own pet.

  3. Vaccinations

Core vaccines up to date and recorded in the health booklet. The rabies vaccine follows the requirements of your destination state and of the airline — even though the federal government does not require it for cats.

  4. Health certificate

Issued by our veterinarian within the timeframe required by your state and by the airline. Before leaving, every kitten is examined twice by our veterinarian.

  5. Flight

By cargo or with a flight nanny, depending on the route, arranged with our IPATA-certified shipping agent. The date takes the season into account: in the hottest and coldest months, airlines may restrict the transport of animals.

  6. Entry & arrival

At the U.S. port of entry, cats may be inspected, and an animal showing signs of disease can be refused entry — one more reason for the two veterinary examinations before departure. You collect your kitten at the arrival terminal.

In practice

When does a kitten leave for the United States?

At the same age as for families here: between 14 and 16 weeks, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, spayed or neutered, and DNA tested. No blood test, no extra months of waiting.

Hawaii is the exception. Two rabies vaccinations, a rabies antibody test and a waiting period are required before arrival; according to the Hawaii Department of Agriculture, a kitten is about six months old by the time preparations are complete. Until then, your kitten stays with us — and you can watch it on our 24/7 live camera.
